Yes you read that right!! Edgerank does not exist.
You may have read that Edgerank is a Facebook algorithm that ranks what is shown in your newsfeed and more importantly, it will determine if your Page content will show up in the newsfeed of your likers. Many have reported that this complex formula is made up of factors including the affinity, weight and age of a post.
I attended a Facebook Bootcamp a couple of weeks ago held by Facebook and was fortunate enough to be asked to be a presenter. Anyway, the representative from Facebook advised that there is no such thing as Edgerank and it was something that was made up and written about by a website a while back.
Even though Edgerank does not exist, there is quite a few algorithms that are used by Facebook to determine what page posts will be shown in likers newsfeeds and how often. The exact algorithm is only know by a few that work for Facebook and I am certain they won’t be divulging it any time soon. The algorithms are also adjusted on a very regular basis.
The one thing that is certain, to get your page posts seen by more of your likers, you need to concentrate on engagement. Here are a few points to consider:
1. When facebook users like your page posts then they will continue to see your posts.
2. Facebook will show users more of the type of the posts that they have liked in the past. For example, if they always “like” images, then there is a better chance that they will be shown images that are posted on your Page.
3. If your posts are being ignored by users and getting no interaction, or worse still, if users hide your posts, then they are less likely to be shown to other likers of your page.
4. If a specific post receives complaints by users who have seen it, or the Page overall has received lots of complaints in the past, then your posts are less likely to be shown to your likers. This factor has started to be rolled out and observed more since September 2012.
I would love to hear your thoughts...
