You have a website for your business but there isn’t much action happening. No one seems to be finding your website. And most small business owners don’t have a huge advertising budget to promote their website.
If this is the case with you, you need to look at low cost (or free) alternatives to start bringing potential customers to your website. And the best way to do this, is to improve the Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) of your website so that it will start to rank in Google (or other search engine) search results.
Below is a great infographic which details 12 steps you can take to improve the SEO on your website.
In summary:
1. Ensure each page has a SEO-friendly permalink URL eg: webonize.com.au/improve-your-seo and not something like webonize.com.au/p=1490. Include your main keywords in your page URL.
2. Ensure your keyword is at the beginning of your meta title tag.
3. Use images, graphics or videos on your pages. Include your main keyword in the file name and insert an alt-tag for the image.
4. Where appropriate, include a link to another website. But ensure the website you are linking to is of high quality and relevant to your page content.
5. Include your keyword towards the beginning of your page content. I like to have them within the first paragraph.
6. Ensure your page title is coded as a H1 tag.
7. Check that your web page isn’t slow to load. A page should load within 4 seconds.
8. Include extra words within your page title so that you also have the opportunity to rank for long tail keywords as well as your targeted keyword. It is now more common for people to use a long string of words when searching in Google – you need to improve your chances for popping up in the results for these searches.
9. Include social sharing buttons on your website to encourage others to share your content.
10. The more content you have on a page the better.
11. Decrease the bounce rate by including links to other pages on your website that contain related content. A bounce is when a visitor quickly closes your web page without spending too much time on your website.
12. Use synonyms of your keywords throughout the page content. Known as LSI keywords, Google will use these to determine the relevance of a web page.
