Over the past couple of months, I’ve been looking closely at what’s actually working in marketing right now, not what’s trending and not what everyone says you should be doing. One thing has become impossible to ignore: marketing has changed, and I don’t think we’ve fully appreciated how much.
AI has changed the way content gets made. Today, almost anyone can generate an Instagram™ post, an email, a blog article or an entire campaign in a matter of minutes. On paper, that sounds like a huge advantage. In practice, it isn’t playing out the way you’d expect.
Why More Content Isn’t Working Anymore
As I’ve looked across campaigns, content and marketing over the past few months, one thing has stood out. The businesses getting the best results aren’t necessarily the ones creating the most content. They’re the ones building the most trust. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
You can ask AI to write an Instagram™ caption, a blog post, an email, a sales page, even an entire launch campaign, and in seconds you’ve got something that would have taken hours before. I use AI every day in my own business. It helps me work faster, organise ideas, create first drafts and analyse data. It’s genuinely one of the best business tools we’ve ever had.
But as AI generated content has increased, people have become far more discerning about the marketing they’re consuming. Think about your own behaviour. How often have you read a social post lately and thought, “that sounds like AI,” or “that feels generic,” or “I’ve seen this exact advice twenty times already”? We’re all getting better at recognising content that feels generic, and that’s changing marketing in a significant way.
For years, creating more content gave businesses an edge. Now, creating more content on its own isn’t enough. People aren’t looking for more content. They’re looking for more confidence. They’re looking for businesses they trust, that understand them, and that consistently show up with ideas that actually help them move forward.
The Shift From Attention To Trust
This is why I believe one thing has become more important than ever: your marketing system.
Here’s what I think a lot of business owners are getting wrong. They’re focused on creating individual pieces of content, another Reel, another carousel, another email, another AI prompt, another blog, another lead magnet, another podcast episode, and treating each one like it works on its own.
In reality, every piece of marketing should have a job. It should lead somewhere. It should build on the piece that came before it, and move someone one step closer to trusting you. Trust isn’t built from one brilliant Instagram™ post. It’s built from consistency: someone discovering you, seeing you again, learning something useful, hearing your point of view, seeing proof that your approach works, and gradually thinking, “I really like the way this person teaches. I trust what they’re saying. I think they could help me.”
That doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because there’s a system behind your marketing.
What This Means For How You Use AI
I’ve been thinking about this a lot while putting together a new masterclass, and it reinforced something I’ve seen inside client accounts for years. The businesses getting the best results aren’t necessarily creating the most content. They’re creating connected marketing, where every piece has a purpose, every touchpoint builds trust, and every message feels consistent. Instead of hoping one Instagram™ post changes everything, they’re building momentum over time. Attention isn’t the hard part anymore. Trust is.
This also changes how I think we should be using AI. AI shouldn’t become your marketing strategy. It should support your marketing strategy, helping you execute faster, brainstorm, repurpose and create first drafts. But it shouldn’t replace your understanding of your audience, your experience, your perspective or your strategy. AI can help you create content, but it can’t build trust for you. Only your marketing can do that.
Why Your Marketing System Is The Real Advantage
The businesses that thrive over the next few years won’t simply be the ones creating more content than everyone else. They’ll be the ones creating marketing that consistently earns trust. AI is no longer the competitive advantage. Your marketing system is, because the businesses that consistently build trust will be the ones that consistently win.
