Are You Targeting the Right Keywords?
Your keywords should be chosen with a lot of research and thought before you do anything online to market your business, including the launch of your website and social media channels. There is no point in having a gorgeous designed website or social media page if your potential customers can’t find you.
Do you know what keywords you want to rank for?
When it comes to keywords, I can’t stress how important it is to do your research. You can’t just guess, or have a “stab in the dark’, when it comes to deciding on what keywords you should target. Ask your target market what keywords and phrases they would use if they were searching for your product to get some different ideas. Don’t forget that keywords are normally more than one word – it can be a phrase 3 to 5 words in length.
Once you have a starting point use this list to do further keyword research using the Google Keyword Tool. Using the Google Keyword Tool you can obtain further ideas for keyword and you want to determine which keywords are going to bring traffic to your website.
When you do this research, you don’t want to just focus on the keywords with the highest amount of traffic. You need to keep in mind that people search the internet for many reasons. Some are browsing, some are doing research and others are ready to buy. If you are selling something you want to target those people that are ready to buy. The keywords that these buyers use are known as ‘buying’ keywords. Buying keywords may have a slightly lower search volume then other keywords but ultimately they are going to be much better for you to target as they are going to offer a much higher sales conversion rate.
For example, you could look at keyword phrases that contain the words ‘buy’, ‘purchase’ or ‘order’ but it would depend on your market and what your business goals are.
Once you have your ‘buying keywords’ clarified and you have decided which page of your site to use each keyword you can then look at which keywords to use for your content/blog/articles pages. These keywords don’t necessarily need to be ‘buying’ keywords but instead can be keywords that people would use when they are doing research on the internet. You can provide great value in your content that provides information on your broad product/service category. You will capture their attention which will give them more incentive to return to your site when they are ready to buy. Just ensure that it is clear in your content pages that you do also offer the particular product/service available for purchase.
