There are so many factors involved with getting your website ranking in search engines. And if you are targeting a highly competitive keyword, then you need to have everything in place to increase your chances of making it to page one of Google Search Results.
Once you have everything set up correctly on your website, you then need to look at backlinking.
What are Backlinks?
Backlinks are links that are placed on other websites that point back to your website, either your home page or another page of your website. In actual fact, to have a good linking structure that looks natural to Google links need to be pointing to a large number of different pages and not just your home page.
There is many ways that you can obtain these backlinks including guest blog posting and directory listings. The most important thing to remember is make sure the website that is linking to you has good quality content and is relevant to your business and/or industry.
Bad backlinks from spammy websites can and will do you more harm than good.
Here is a video from Matt Cutts, head of webspam at Google that explains that backlinks are an important factor when Google is deciding what websites to show in their search results.
