Social Media marketing has become a huge issue for many small business owners.
They are spending so much time on there, consumed by the numbers and obsessed with getting more reach. Or they are spending all their working hours trying to increase the number of followers on Pinterest, Instagram or Twitter or perhaps all of them. And also trying to get more likers on their Facebook page and obsessing over the numbers & reach on their Facebook posts.
If you are one of these people, please stop now. You don’t have any control over these numbers so concentrate on what you do have control over.
Here are some points for you to consider:
1. Facebook page posts reach have dropped. No one is denying it and everyone is in the same situation. But really, is the reach on Facebook any lower then your other social media channels. I doubt it. It is just that the other channels don’t make the information as easy to examine. Not all of your followers are going to be online around the time of when you make your post so it is unrealistic to expect everyone is going to see every post you make.
2. You don’t need a huge amount of followers on social media to get results. You just need to be using them correctly. One of my very first clients 3 years ago when I founded Webonize, found me on Twitter. My Twitter account was only about a month old so I had very minimal followers. This client is an SEO client, on a monthly management package, and is still with me today.
3. I lot of my clients find me on Facebook, and in the majority of cases it isn’t because they saw a post on my Facebook page. Instead I have gotten to know them or helped them out with a problem they were having with no intention of selling to them. Use Facebook to build relationships and this doesn’t happen just on your Facebook page. Join groups and be an active participant and join in the conversation on other businesses Facebook pages.
4. Pinterest can be a huge source of traffic to your website. So ensure you have a “pinnable” image on every page of your website and make it easy for visitors to pin your images by having a “Pin It” button.
5. Have a presence on as many social media platforms as you can even if you aren’t using them regularly. Have a completed profile and use keywords that relate to what your business offers. This will give you more chances of being found when someone is searching for what you offer.
And the most important point of all – concentrate on the numbers that count – then numbers on your website and your mailing list!

So stop worrying and obsessing about your numbers on your social media channels. Both your website and your mailing list are owned by you. No one else controls them and no one can take them away so make sure a large percentage of your marketing efforts have the growth of your website and your mailing list as top priority.
