I have been asked this exact question quite a few times over the past few weeks.
It can be very dis-heartening. You have spent many hours getting your website live and you are now super proud of the results and want to show it off. But how do people find your new website?
More importantly, how do I get Google to show it in the search results when someone is searching for what I offer?
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the implementation of strategies and techniques both on your website and on the web in order to obtain high rankings in Google (and other search engines) so that when someone is searching for what you offer in Google they are able to find your website returned as a result.
In order to get high rankings, especially for search terms that are highly competitive, it can take some time. However I have been able to get relatively high rankings for clients on some search terms (also known as keywords) within a matter of days.
Once your new website is live, ensure that the following items are in place.
- Create a Google Analytics account and verify it with your website. Google Analytics will then give you insights into how your website is performing, how visitors are finding your website and what pages that are landing on and exiting from.
2. Verify your website with Google Search Console. The Search Console will provide you with the details of any problems detected on your website by Google as well as giving you more insights into your website performance.
3. Submit a XML Sitemap to Google via the Search Console. If you notice any warnings or errors in the sitemap generic online pharmacies than ensure this is fixed up as soon as possible. Submitting a sitemap is the fastest way to get Google to come and crawl your website.
4. Check that you don’t have code installed on the website that is blocking Google from crawling your website. This is known as the robots.txt file. You can check this in Google Search Console. Go to Crawl>robots.txt Tester and ensure your website pages and posts aren’t being blocked.
5. Again in Google Search Console check if Google is recommending any HTML improvements for your website and fix any that are showing. To see these navigate to Search Appearance>HTML Improvements.
6. Create a few backlinks by submitting your website URL to a few reputable directories. If you are a local business Yellow Pages, True Local and other local directory websites are a good place to start.
7. Create social media profiles, add your website URL into the profiles and publish posts linking to different pages on your website. This can include, but not limited to, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.
8. Setup a Google My Business account, complete all information and verify the account.
9. Add a blog to your website and publish quality content on a regular basis that relates to your business and target market. Blog content gets crawled and indexed more quickly than static website pages and they bring more traffic to your website.
As I mentioned before Search Engine Optimisation is in-depth and takes continual effort. This list will get you started.
